Who we are What we do

Founded in 1982 by Father Charles McNaboe, Bethany House thanks you for your interest and care in its programs. The initial purpose of Bethany House was, and still is, to feed the hungry. Over the years programs became more  expansive, beyond much more than a meal. What began as a simple soup kitchen expanded into a well-planned kitchen operation serving  hundreds on site as well as city-wide meal delivery.    Read more...

Bethany House serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner six days a week for any and all walk-in clients. On Sundays, clients receive a bag lunch. Bethany House has many other meal and food service programs to meet the needs of this Texas border community. Read More...

Who we help Other Services to the community

The homeless, indigent, elderly, veterans, disabled, and residents of the emergency shelter complex are the targeted population. Services are free of charge for meals, shelter and resource center services. While this is what Bethany House is most known for, it is by no means all it does.

Lamar Bruni Vergara Community Shelter. Provides 28 emergency shelter beds and 8 efficiency units for individuals and families.(more..)

Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Resource Center. Offers daily life amenities, as well as  social, medical, mental health, employment, job training and life skills referrals and direct services for all homeless and indigent individuals during the day (more..)

The Thrift StoreThe Vintage Store

The store provides clothing for clients, and recycled home furniture for the indigent. All proceeds generated from store activity are utilized to help feed and shelter those in need.

The Thrift Store is located within the Bethany House dining facility at 819 Hidalgo.

Located just a block away from the kitchen and shelter complex at 920 Hidalgo, the store provides items that are a step-up in quality from those of the thrift store. It has a stock of great quality clothing, home décor items, furniture, electronics, and many other treasures. The store allow us to providing clothing for residents, including school children and adults in search of a job. A great place to shop for the entire family!
